Mini Kielder Adventure

While Johan was out on his Byrness to Alwinton run yesterday, my mum and I had our own mini adventure.

After dropping Johan off at Byrness, we decided to head into Kielder for a bit of food and a little wander. The Forest Drive is currently closed due to fallen trees blocking the road, and so we ended up on a lovely detour through north Northumberland. I was driving my mum’s car (an automatic Skoda Citigo) which added a different element to the driving as I had never driven an auto on county roads. It certainly had a mind of its own at times!

We took our time and enjoyed the beautiful scenery offered up by Northumberland and made our way to the car park at Leaplish where we had some lunch and a chilled out wander about.

We took things easy, then got back in the car and pottered back up to the Castle for a cuppa and a piece of cake at the Duke’s Pantry tearoom.

After a short wander through to trees to the village shop, and back up to the Castle, we enjoyed some lovely homemade lemon cake with a cuppa while watching the birds outside and the ‘forest cam’ on the widescreen.

Time was getting on so we decided to make our way back through the wonderful Northumberland countryside to Alwinton to await Johan finishing his run.

It was a rather hazy day, but the views were exceptional nonetheless – Northumberland really is a beautiful county and I’m so lucky to have been brought up exploring what it has to offer. For all we live in Newcastle, Northumberland is still home to me.
